What are cookies?

Is it possible to block cookies?
Yes, it is possible to block or allow cookies on all websites, or to choose the websites for which cookies are allowed.
Is it advisable to block all cookies?
Not necessarily. Blocking all cookies may help protect privacy, but it may also limit the functionality available on some websites. It is therefore advisable to choose the websites for which cookies are allowed. You can initially block all cookies and then allow those required by websites you consider trustworthy.
What are temporary cookies?
Temporary cookies, or session cookies, are removed from your computer when the browser is closed. They are used to store temporary information, such as items in a shopping cart.
What are persistent cookies?
Persistent cookies, or saved cookies, remain stored on your computer even after closing the browser. They are used to store information, such as login name and password, so that users do not have to re-enter them each time they visit a specific website. Persistent cookies may remain on your computer for days, months or even years.
What are first-party cookies?
First-party cookies come from the website being viewed and may be persistent or temporary. They may be used to store information that will be reused on your next visit to the website.
What are third-party cookies?
Third-party cookies come from advertisements on other websites, such as pop-ups or banner ads, present on the website being viewed. They may be used to record website usage for marketing purposes.
Enabling or disabling cookies
1. Click the Chrome menu icon.
2. Select Settings.
3. At the bottom of the page, click Show advanced settings.
4. In the “Privacy” section, click Content settings.
5. Enable or disable cookies:

7. To disable cookies, select Block sites from setting any data.
8. Click Done to save.
If you prefer Google Chrome not to store a record of your visits and downloads, you can browse the web in incognito mode.
Opening an incognito window
An incognito window looks different from a normal window. The top part of an incognito window is grey or blue, depending on the computer or device.
To open an incognito window, follow these steps:
Exiting incognito mode
To exit incognito mode, you can:
· Click the X icon in the corner of the window.
· Use the keyboard shortcut Alt+F4 on Windows and Linux, or ⌘-Shift-W on Mac.
· Close the last tab in a window; the window will also close automatically.
How it works
· Browsing history is not recorded. Web pages viewed and files downloaded in incognito mode are not recorded in browsing or download histories.
· Cookies are deleted. All new cookies are deleted after all incognito windows are closed.
· You can easily switch between incognito mode and normal mode. You can open incognito windows and normal windows at the same time and switch between the two modes.
· Extensions are disabled. In incognito windows, extensions are automatically disabled. This is because Google Chrome does not control how extensions manage your personal data. If you want an extension to appear in incognito windows, select the “Allow in incognito” checkbox for that extension.
Data that is stored
Chrome stores updates to bookmarks and general settings.
Chrome stores any changes made to bookmarks or general settings while in incognito mode.
Websites may keep a record of your visit.
Incognito browsing is only intended to prevent Google Chrome from storing information about the websites you have visited. The websites visited may still keep records of your visit. In addition, all files saved on your computer or mobile devices are retained.
To delete cookies, follow these steps:
1. To open Internet Explorer, click the Start button. In the search box, type Internet Explorer and then click Internet Explorer in the list of results.
2. Click the Tools button and then select Internet Options.
3. Click the General tab and then, under Browsing history, click Delete.
4. Select the Cookies checkbox and then click Delete if it is not already selected. Select or clear the checkboxes for any other options you wish to delete. To keep cookies for saved favourites, select the Preserve Favorites website data checkbox.

Preferences > Advanced > Cookies. These settings allow you to configure cookie management in Opera. The default setting accepts all cookies.

Delete new cookies when exiting Opera
Some websites need cookies to work properly. In this case, if you want to prevent cookies from being stored between browsing sessions, enable the “Delete new cookies when exiting Opera” option.
Ask before accepting a cookie
To decide each time what to do with received cookies, select “Ask before accepting a cookie”. In this way, for each new cookie, the cookie dialog window will appear, containing information about the origin of the cookie and its attributes.
Cookie management
The cookie manager allows you to examine and modify cookies saved in Opera. The “Cookie management...” button opens a window containing a list of folders, each identified by a domain. After using the quick search field to locate a domain, open the related folder to view all cookies connected to it.
The cookie dialog window
The cookie dialog window is displayed every time a website offers a cookie, but only if the “Ask before accepting a cookie” option has been enabled in Preferences > Advanced > Cookies. The dialog window displays the origin of the cookie and its attributes and allows you to choose whether to accept or reject it.
Force removal when exiting Opera
Tick the “Force removal when exiting Opera” box to require that the cookie be removed at the end of the session, regardless of its expiry date.
Remember the choice for all cookies from this domain
To accept or reject all cookies set for the same domain, tick the “Remember the choice for all cookies from this domain” box. In this way, the next time a cookie is offered for the same domain, the dialog window will no longer be shown.

To set cookie blocking
Tap Block Cookies and choose “Never”, “From third parties and advertisers” or “Always”. Cookies are information from websites that is stored on the device to allow the websites themselves to remember the user on the next visit and so that the web page can be customised based on the information obtained.
Important: some pages may only work if cookies are accepted.
To enable or disable JavaScript
Click Advanced and enable or disable the corresponding option. JavaScript allows web programmers to control page elements. For example, a page that uses JavaScript may display the current date and time or open a link in a new pop-up window.
To remove information from the device
· To delete your history from Safari, tap Settings > Safari > Clear History.
· To delete all cookies from Safari, tap Settings > Safari > Clear Cookies and Data.
To delete other information stored by Safari, tap Advanced > Website Data > Remove All Website Data.
To check or change your settings:
Deleting cookies for a specific website
1. Click the menu button and select Options.
2. Select the Privacy panel.
3. Under History settings, select Use custom settings.
4. Click Show Cookies.... The Cookies window will appear.
5. In the Search field, type the name of the website whose cookies you want to remove. A list of cookies matching the search will appear.
6. In the list, select the cookies to remove and click the Remove Cookie button.
7. To select all cookies in the list, select the first cookie and press Shift+End.
8. Click the Close button to close the Cookies window.
9. Click OK to close the options window.
Deleting all cookies
1. Click the menu button, select History and then Clear Recent History.
2. From the Time range to clear drop-down menu, select Everything.
3. Click the arrow next to Details to display the list of items to delete.
4. Select Cookies and make sure that the other items you wish to keep are not selected.
5. Click Clear Now to delete the cookies, then close the Clear All History window.

Disabling third-party cookies
Third-party cookies are cookies set by a website other than the one you are currently visiting. For example, the website cnn.com may contain a Facebook “Like” button. That button will set a cookie that can be read by Facebook. This could be considered a third-party cookie.
Some advertisers use these types of cookies to track users’ visits across all websites where they offer their services. If a user believes that this tracking may be a concern and an intrusion into their privacy, third-party cookies can be disabled in Firefox.
Notes:
· Disabling third-party cookies may prevent tracking by advertisers in some cases, but not in all cases.
· Some websites, such as Microsoft Hotmail, MSN and Windows Live Mail mailboxes, use third-party cookies for purposes that are not necessarily related to privacy, and disabling them may interfere with the proper functioning of those websites.

Note: if, while browsing with this type of setting, you realise that some of your favourite websites cannot be displayed correctly, an intermediate solution is to set the Accept third-party cookies option to From visited sites. This setting allows third-party cookies from websites previously visited to be accepted.
